If you've ever Googled yourself and cringed at the photo that came up — this post is for you.
Your headshot is working for you every single day. It's on your LinkedIn. Your company website. Your email signature. Your speaker bio. It's often the very first impression someone has of you before they've said a single word to you.
I've been shooting corporate headshots for professionals, teams, and brands across Washington DC and the DMV since 2018 — including work for Google and enterprise clients in some of DC's most prominent buildings. Here's everything you need to know before you book.
What to Wear And What to Avoid
This is the number one thing that makes or breaks a headshot before the camera even comes out.
Wear:
- Solid colors — navy, charcoal, burgundy, forest green, and white all photograph beautifully
- Fitted clothing — nothing too baggy or too tight
- What you'd actually wear to an important meeting or client presentation
- A second outfit option — it gives you variety and costs nothing extra
Avoid:
- Busy patterns, small stripes, or tight plaid — they create a visual vibration on camera called moiré and it's distracting
- Loud logos or graphics
- Clothes that are wrinkled — they read 10x worse on camera than in person
- Anything you're not comfortable in — if you feel off, it shows in your face
One tip I always give clients: lay your outfits out the night before. Don't be picking clothes the morning of the shoot while you're already stressed.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Pros and Cons
Both work. The right choice depends on your brand and what you're going for.
Indoor sessions give you a clean, controlled look. White, gray, or dark backgrounds keep the focus entirely on you. No wind. No squinting. No worrying about weather. This is the go-to for law firms, financial advisors, tech companies, and anyone who wants a sharp, professional result that works everywhere.
Outdoor sessions in DC give you incredible natural light and the city as your backdrop. Think Georgetown streets, the National Mall, or a clean urban environment. It adds personality and works great for entrepreneurs, creatives, and personal brands who want something that feels more approachable and less corporate.
I shoot both — and I'll always recommend what fits your brand, not just what's easier for me.
How Long Does a Session Take?
For an individual headshot session — plan for 30 to 45 minutes. That gives us time to try a couple of different looks, adjust lighting, and make sure you're relaxed and comfortable before we get the shots that actually count.
For team headshots — I typically shoot 10 to 15 people per hour depending on the setup. If your company needs 20 employees done in one afternoon, that's absolutely doable. I come to your office, set up a clean backdrop, and we move efficiently without making anyone feel rushed.
The biggest mistake people make is booking a headshot when they're already stressed and running between meetings. Give yourself a buffer. The best shots come when you've had five minutes to breathe.
