Why the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM stays in my kit
A wider lens gives me room to show a person and the setting around them. The Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM has been a useful partner to my Sony A7R IV for that kind of photograph, from events and weddings to travel and street scenes.
Make the surroundings part of the story
With a 24mm view, I can include architecture, landscape, or the activity around a subject. The composition still needs a clear point of attention. I look at what belongs in the frame and what distracts from it before making the photograph.
For people, camera distance and placement matter. I pay attention to perspective and avoid letting the edges of the frame pull attention away from the person.
Use the aperture with a purpose
The f/1.4 maximum aperture offers flexibility, but I choose an aperture based on the image. A portrait, group, and layered event scene may need different depth of field. The goal is to keep the parts that matter in focus.
Light, shutter speed, subject movement, and focus all work together. A wide aperture is one tool within those decisions.
A practical combination for moving between scenes
I appreciate a setup that lets me respond as the surroundings change. The 24mm gives me an environmental perspective while the A7R IV supports detailed still photographs. When I want a tighter portrait or a different relationship to the background, I change the lens or position.
The equipment helps me work, but the story guides the choice: what I want you to notice, how the person relates to the setting, and what this moment adds to the gallery.
